Orthodontics

What is orthodontics

Orthodontics is a dental speciality concerned with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of facial irregularities such as crooked, crowded or protruding teeth.

You may benefit from orthodontic treatment if you feel you have:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gappy teeth
  • Large overlap of teeth
  • Poor bite

Orthodontic treatment at Barbican Dental Centre is carried out by Amish Patel who is registered specialist in orthodontics.

Can’t I just have veneers?

Veneers are artificial coverings that are placed over teeth to help improve their appearance.  However this technique can involve trimming down our teeth, which is an irreversible process.  Over time the veneers can fracture and stain and can increase your risk of dental decay and periodontal disease.  Orthodontics utilises your natural teeth and places them in a more pleasing position in your smile and harmonises your teeth to your facial features.

I don’t want to wear metal braces. Is there any other way?

With advances in technology it is now possible to have the benefits of orthodontics while using braces that are aesthetic and discrete.  This may include using ceramic (tooth coloured) braces, lingual braces and clear aligners.

How long do I need braces for?

This depends on the original problem and if you need to have teeth removed to straighten teeth.  However treatment can take as little as 6 months.  Treatment time should be discussed with your orthodontist.

What happens once the braces are removed?

Once the braces are removed you will be fitted with retainers.  Compliance with your retainer regime is essential to ensure you maintain your smile. Initially you will need to wear the retainers full time and go to night time wear.  Failure to wear retainers properly may result in relapse of your treatment.
